Otoplasty

Otoplasty is performed to adjust protruding ears. This condition can be quite harmful to the self-confidence and self-esteem of a person, especially young children who are often made fun of. Otoplasty can be performed at any age after the ears have fully grown. This means that children around 5 or 6 years of age are eligible for the surgery.

Understanding the Process of Otoplasty

Surgery starts with a cut simply behind the ear; along the natural fold where the ear is joined to the head. The specialist will then expel the required amounts of ligament and skin to accomplish the correct adjustment. In other situations, the specialist may trim the ligament and mold it into a more attractive frame. Afterward, the surgeon will attach the ligament back with permanent sutures to secure the cartilage.

In some cases, the specialist will not remove any cartilage. Instead, stitches will be used to hold the ligament in place as the surgeon performs a readjustment. After molding the ligament to the desired shape, the specialist will apply sutures to grapple the ear until healing kicks in to permanently hold the ear in the required position.

Recovery After Surgery

The ears are covered with soft bandages after the surgery has been completed. A mild extent of discomfort is expected as the ears naturally begin their healing. Sleeping on the side may become difficult or impossible as no pressure must be applied to the ears. This may only continue for a week. Your surgeon may also prescribe wearing a headband for at least 2 weeks after the surgery to hold the ears in the desired position.

Risks Associated with Otoplasty

In normal circumstances and if the surgery is completed successfully by the well-qualified surgeon, the risks associated are quite minimal. However, rare infections, poor healing or the ear returning to deformity has been known to happen.

The surgery usually leaves behind a thin white scar as the healing kicks in. The scar is behind the ear so it is difficult to detect.

Can Otoplasty Affect Hearing?

Since ears support one of the essential five senses of the human body, people can be apprehensive about the Otoplasty surgery. It is significant to mention that the procedure will not affect hearing. The fields and convolutions of the ear are supposed to concentrate and localize the sound waves but the surgery only pins back or reshapes the ears. This will not produce any evident change in the hearing of the person.

Why Consider Otoplasty?

If you feel like your protruding ears are damaging your confidence and esteem levels, you can consult a Specialist to consider the Otoplasty surgery. Ears shaped as desired will give you a boost of confidence required to normally function in society.

It is quite important to do thorough research before making a final decision about getting Otoplasty. If you have an existing medical condition, then you must consult your personal health specialist before deciding to get the surgery done.

If you live in the city of Fort McMurray, you can contact us at Timberlea Services Centre to learn about the available options. The surgery is usually not covered by insurance as it is meant for cosmetic purposes.
