Also known as a forehead lift, a brow lift is a surgery that is performed to reduce the wrinkle lines that develop horizontally across the forehead as well as the bridge of the nose and between the eyes. Brow lift also improves frown lines and the vertical creases that develop between the eye brows. In short, all the lines and changes that occur due to aging across the brow and the forehead region are corrected and removed using the brow lift procedure.
One of the important aspects of this surgery is that it can be done with other procedures as well. When you age, lines across the forehead and between the eyes start to deepen and as the skin and soft tissues lose elasticity, the distance between the eyebrows and the eyelashes also reduces. This combination of low eye brows and deep lines can present you as being tired, angry or sad. By undergoing the brow lift procedure, you can get the facial lines softened, eye brows raised and restore a youthful appearance.
How Is A Brow Lift Performed?
Based on your desired results, the brow lift techniques can differ. The specific technique used by your doctor will determine the location of incisions and the resulting scars. Following are some of the options available for your doctor. It is also worth mentioning that the doctor might use a combination of these techniques to provide you with the results that you desire:
- Coronal Brow Lift – In this procedure, the doctor will make an incision behind the hairline across the top of the head. The doctor will lift your forehead to its new position, with the scalp in front of the incision overlapping the scalp behind it. The overlapping scalp is removed and the remaining portion is sewed together. This technique, however, is not suitable for people having high hairlines and who are likely to lose hair.
- Hairline Brow Lift – Under this technique, the doctor will make an incision between the top of your forehead and the beginning spot of your hairline. From the top of the forehead, the doctor will remove a small amount of skin and tissues. This will result in the improvements in the horizontal creases while keeping the hairline at the original position.
- Endoscopic Brow Lift – In this technique, several small incisions behind the hairline are made. The doctor then inserts a long thin tube that has a camera. This gives a clear view of the tissues and the underlying muscles to the doctor. Using another instrument, the doctor lifts the forehead tissues and anchors them in place with sutures and small screws. After that, the incisions are closed with small clips.
The brow lift procedure takes at least 2 hours to complete.
How do I Prepare for a Brow Lift?
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle including a healthy diet and regular exercise is important for preparing for this procedure. Smoking can lengthen the healing process so it is important the patient does not smoke. Dr. Anzarut can consult with you prior to booking the procedure to help you set up a plan to stop smoking. Also, taking good care of your skin and having a quality skin regimen will help improve your overall result.
What Procedures are Often Combined with a Brow Lift?
Sometimes due to the position of the brows, there may be sagging skin of the lower lids. Over time, the eye brows can drop which can result in heavy upper lids. Sometimes re-positioning of the brows and removal of skin from the upper lids is necessary to achieve the desired result. When necessary, if there are wrinkles between the brows, we release muscles through the eyelid surgery incision. This can be accomplished with eyelid surgery which is often combined with a brow lift.
Depending on the goals and desired results, sometimes it is necessary to address the upper face through a brow lift, the middle face through a facelift and the lower face through a neck lift. Dr. Anzarut will discuss all of your options in your initial consultation.
What are the Risks Associated with a Brow Lift?
There are some risks to any procedure, and a brow lift is no different. The risks specific to a brow lift may include loss of hair in the areas where incisions occur, and/or an elevated hairline. We reduce these risks by designing the incision to minimize negative side effects. There is always a risk to the facial nerve which could cause asymmetry to the face. We decrease this risk through careful planning and dissection. The patient may also feel numbness, especially in the forehead and scalp. This usually subsides over a few months.
Is a Brow Lift Performed Under Local Anaesthetic or a General Anaesthetic?
It all depends on whether the patient feels comfortable to be awake during the procedure, as well as what type of brow lift is required. We can perform the operation under local anesthetic, however, if a more extensive procedure is required, we may recommend a general anesthetic.
Timberlea Services Centre offers a wide variety of procedures. We strongly suggest you book an initial consult with Dr Anzarut to discuss what your goals are.
